The Ghana Grid Company Ltd (GRIDCo), as the designated operator of the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS), has notified the public of a scheduled power outage in selected areas of the country on the evening of October 26, 2023.
This planned interruption is a result of constrained gas supply to the Tema facility, leading to a 550MW deficit during peak hours, consequently impacting power distribution to specific regions.
GRIDCo, established in December 2006, is entrusted with the economic dispatch and transmission of electricity from various wholesale suppliers, such as Independent Power Producers (IPPs), to both bulk customers and distribution utilities within Ghana and the West African region. Operational since August 1, 2008, following the transfer of the Transmission System Department and its key personnel from the Volta River Authority (VRA) to GRIDCo, the company manages the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS). GRIDCo presently provides electricity transmission services to thirty-one (31) Bulk Customers and Distribution Utilities, receiving power from eleven (11) Wholesale Suppliers, including the Volta River Authority (VRA).
