Ghana Chamber of Mines Appoints Michael Akafia as New President

The Ghana Chamber of Mines has appointed Michael Akafia as its new President, succeeding Joshua Mortoti.

Mr Akafia, currently serving as Vice President of External Affairs at Gold Fields Ghana Limited, brings extensive experience and a proven track record in the mining industry to his new role.

With a background in legal, compliance, and mining business, along with strong strategic vision and leadership skills, Akafia is well-prepared to lead the Chamber during this critical period.

Sulemanu Koney, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, expressed confidence in Akafia’s ability to advance the Chamber’s mission and vision.

Mr Koney highlighted Akafia’s dedication to sustainable mining practices and economic development in Ghana as invaluable assets for his new position.

In accepting the appointment, Akafia expressed gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to work with the Chamber’s Executive Committee and Council to achieve its goals.

He emphasized the importance of advocating for policies that support the growth of the mining sector and contribute to Ghana’s prosperity.

Akafia succeeds Joshua Mortoti, who resigned from Gold Fields Ghana. The Chamber acknowledged Mortoti’s leadership in advancing its objectives and wished him success in his future endeavours.

Profile of Michael Akafia

Michael Akafia holds degrees in International Commercial Litigation, International Dispute Resolution, and Finance. He joined Gold Fields in 2010 and has served as Vice President and Head of Legal and Compliance since 2015.

Mr Akafia has a diverse background in law, economics, tax, and finance, and holds various licenses and certifications in these fields.

Before joining Gold Fields, Akafia worked in legal and compliance roles at SIC Financial Services Limited and Bentsi-Enchill, Letsa, and Ankomah law firm. He has also served as a lecturer and board member in various capacities.
