Registrar General warns firms to file annual returns or face deregistration

The Registrar General, Jemima Oware, has stressed the urgent need for companies and businesses to file their annual returns or risk being struck from the register by the end of this month.

This directive follows an ultimatum issued to over 500,000 firms, urging them to comply or face removal from the companies’ register.

According to the registrar general, affected firms have received multiple notices and reminders over the past two years. Despite these efforts, only a few have voluntarily requested deletion from the register.

In a recent interview, Mrs Oware emphasized the importance of taking advantage of the grace period to file annual returns before the deadline as failure to comply will result in the removal of their names from the register, effectively barring them from conducting business in Ghana.

She highlighted the severe consequences of non-compliance and urged immediate action to avoid deregistration.

“When we started the exercise, we had close to 10,000 companies that had not filed any annual returns or financial statements, in the first publication, we listed about 2,203 companies that we intended to strike off. We gave them an opportunity to come and update us,” Oware explained.

Oware further stated, “I have 8,895 companies that have not filed, and those are the companies I’ve given until the end of June to come and update us. If they don’t, then from July 1, we’ll take their names off the register. When we take your name off the register, it means you cannot carry on business in Ghana.”

The Registrar General’s office is committed to maintaining an updated and accurate companies’ register and is determined to enforce compliance to ensure the integrity of the business environment in Ghana.
