Yen Choi, CEO of Onix Data Centre, has emphasized the importance of locating data centres in Ghana to ensure data sovereignty and technological independence.
Speaking at a partnership agreement signing ceremony with Africa Data Centres, Mr. Choi noted that Africa is in the early stages of digital transformation and relies heavily on data stored in-country.
Mr. Choi highlighted two key reasons for locating data centres in Ghana: data sovereignty and performance. “You want to keep your data within the country, and when you click on a video, you want it to load immediately,” he explained.
The partnership between Onix Data Centre and Africa Data Centres aims to enhance digital infrastructure in West Africa, leveraging innovative technologies and sustainable practices. Dr. Krishnan Ranganeth, Regional Executive for West Africa at Africa Data Centres, emphasized the need for digital infrastructure in Africa, noting that the market is evolving and requires localized solutions.
The collaboration also includes UniCloud Africa, supporting both large organizations and SMEs in accessing advanced digital infrastructure. Ladi Okuneye, CEO of UniCloud Africa, noted that this initiative drives economic growth and digital transformation.
Data centres are essential infrastructure for modern economies, providing storage, processing, and access to vast amounts of data. The benefits of data centre services account for approximately 6 per cent of global GDP.”
