Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana suspends 15% fare increase

91views

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has suspended its planned 15% increase in transport fares, which was set to take effect on Monday, July 22, 2024. The proposed hike was initially attributed to the rising costs of fuel and essential spare parts for the transport business.

However, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) urged commuters to disregard the announcement. In an interview with Citi Business News, David Agboado, Public Relations Officer of the Concerned Drivers Association, explained that the timing of the fare increase would further burden the public, leading to the decision to suspend it.

“We, the transport operators, have deliberated and agreed that although fuel, spare parts, and other essentials have increased in price, now is not the appropriate time to raise transport fares,” Agboado said. “Therefore, we have decided not to implement the increase.”

He further urged commercial drivers to maintain current fare rates until a more suitable time for an increase is determined. “What I will tell my fellow drivers is to exercise patience. We made the decision to increase fares in their interest, and this suspension is also in their interest. The right time for an increase will come, but for now, they should continue charging the old fares.”

Agboado reassured drivers that the decision was made collectively and with their best interests in mind, urging them to remain calm and patient.
