Telecommunications giant MTN Ghana has responded to growing public concerns about the high cost of internet data, which has been affecting businesses and sparking outrage on social media.
The controversy has led to calls for the dissolution of the National Communications Authority (NCA) board, with critics citing high data costs and unreliable service.
Some attribute these issues to MTN Ghana’s designation as a Significant Market Player (SMP). Addressing these concerns during a visit by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Communication, MTN Ghana’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer explained the regulatory measures in place to foster competition while considering public interest.
“I believe the NCA has addressed the reasons behind our current data pricing structure. They have highlighted how low our prices are compared to other countries in the sub-region,” the officer stated.
She further elaborated, “The declaration of MTN Ghana as a Significant Market Player means our data prices must be higher than those of our competitors. This measure is intended to improve competition. The NCA has provided explanations for our data pricing structure, emphasizing public interest reasons for these decisions.”
MTN Ghana’s response aims to clarify the rationale behind the data pricing and address the public’s concerns regarding the high cost of internet services in the country.
