GPHA disputes compensation claims by former casual workers

69views

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has stated that a group of former casual workers threatening a demonstration over alleged unpaid severance compensation have no legitimate claim.

The GPHA asserts that the group is attempting to mislead the public and has been making similar threats each election year to pressure the Authority into paying undeserved compensation, despite the Supreme Court’s 2014 ruling on the matter.

In response to the planned demonstration, the GPHA declared that the group’s claims and threats are unfounded and lack factual basis.

The Authority emphasized, “While demonstrations are a constitutional right, they also come with constitutional and statutory obligations. The Supreme Court’s judgments have not been overturned. We remind the members of this group that the Port enclave is a security zone, and any attempt to unduly disrupt operations will have security implications. Please be advised.”

A spokesperson for the aggrieved workers, Moses Kwanayah, claims that over 4,000 individuals were affected by a World Bank programme to restructure operations at the port between 2001 and 2002.

He asserts that, despite the case reaching the Supreme Court and the presidency, these workers have yet to receive a proper severance package commensurate with their service.
