The NDC Minority in Parliament is inviting Vice President Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia to participate in the debate on the Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review of the 2024 Budget Statement and Economic Policy of the Government of Ghana.

In a press statement signed by the Deputy Minority Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, the Minority caucus extends this public invitation to the Vice President, given his role as Chairman of the Economic Management Team of the government.

The debate is scheduled to begin on Thursday, July 25, 2024, in the Parliamentary Chamber at 10:00 AM.

Parliamentary rules permit a sitting Vice President to participate in debates on the floor of the House. Pursuant to the Vice President’s recent call for a debate on the economy, Mr. Ibrahim stated that this invitation presents Alhaji Bawumia with an excellent opportunity to debate and account for his stewardship over the last seven and a half years as Chairman of the Economic Management Team.

The NDC Minority has assembled a team of highly knowledgeable and competent members to debate Vice President Bawumia and highlight the perceived shortcomings of his government’s economic performance.

The Minority points to the World Bank’s findings, which indicate that 33.3 per cent of Ghana’s population is extremely poor, about two million Ghanaians face acute food and nutrition insecurity, and approximately 35% of Ghana’s youth are unemployed—the highest in the Fourth Republic.

The Minority’s team for the debate includes:

Hon. George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, Chairman, Committee on Economy and Development

Hon. Isaac Adongo, Ranking Member, Finance Committee

Hon. Thomas Ampem Nyarko, Chairman, Budget Committee

Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, Ranking Member, Committee on Energy and Member of the Finance Committee

Hon. Eric Opoku, Ranking Member, Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs, and Member of the Committee on Economy and Development

Hon. Laadi Ayii Ayamba, Member, Finance Committee and ECOWAS Parliament

Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, Ranking Member, Committee on Employment, Social Welfare and Pensions

The NDC Minority calls on the general public to encourage Vice President Alhaji Bawumia to accept this invitation if he is proud of his record, or to otherwise remain silent.
