Four individuals, including three Ghanaians and a Chinese national, have been detained by the police for their involvement in the tampering and installation of meters from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The group includes Wisdom Sewlorm, an agent who took possession of the ECG meters for installation, and his employee, Ernest Afatsawu, who tampered with the meters and sold them to a Chinese plastic manufacturing firm for GH₵1200.
Rulian Shan, the manager of the Chinese firm, and his sales manager, Ali Yakubu, were apprehended on Friday, August 2. Ernest and Wisdom are currently under investigation following their summons.
The ECG has calculated the financial damage to be over GH₵77,000 for the period between July and August. Paul Abariga, the Director responsible for Investigation, Prosecution, and Security, has stated that the four individuals will be brought to court on Wednesday. Additionally, the contract with the ECG contractor involved will be terminated.
“There are meters being installed in many parts of our operational area, and investigations reported to this directorate have revealed that some of the meters being installed are tampered with before they are installed. We undertook investigations and found the intel and reports to be true,” Abariga stated.
“Based on that, we arrested these four individuals. They had a meter meant for residential use but were using it in a factory to manufacture plastic bowls at Oblogo near Weija. By the end of the day, we would have finished our investigations and put them before court tomorrow,” he added.
