Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo, the Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), has outlined the management’s progress in enhancing the trust.
Speaking at the 2024 annual operations and benefits conference in Elmina, Central Region, Osafo-Maafo detailed the adoption of three key pillars aimed at ensuring the scheme’s sustainability and efficiency.
Osafo-Maafo emphasized that the sustainability of the SSNIT scheme is a top priority, achieved through expanding coverage, enforcing compliance, making prudent investments, and practicing responsible governance.
He noted that the trust has made significant strides in improving its sustainability, with contributions from both the private and public sectors showing steady improvement. However, he expressed concern over the continued indebtedness of public sector institutions to the trust.
“The strategic direction of this institution is anchored on three pillars: sustainability of the scheme, adoption of state-of-the-art technology, and ensuring that benefits are adequate,” Osafo-Maafo stated.
He highlighted that the adoption of advanced technology has already led to significant improvements in data management and operational efficiency.
“Ten years ago, handling the logistics of our operations required a pickup truck and a team of people to carry various boxes. Today, technology has transformed that process, making it far less cumbersome,” he said, adding that further advancements in technology will continue to streamline operations.
The third pillar, according to Osafo-Maafo, focuses on ensuring that benefits are adequate for members. He acknowledged the marked improvements in contributions from both the private and public sectors, but emphasized the need for ongoing efforts to do better each year.
“This year’s conference is expected to generate strategies to expand the scheme’s coverage while leveraging appropriate technologies to enhance our services,” he concluded, stressing the importance of continuous improvement in all aspects of the trust’s operations.
