Workers at the Pambros Salt Factory, situated along the Weija Junction stretch, are protesting against what they claim is an attempt by certain traditional authorities to allocate portions of the salt mining area to Chinese business interests. Dressed in red and black, the workers voiced their strong opposition, fearing that this move could result in significant job losses.
Reports indicate that over 1,000 workers may be at risk of losing their jobs if the salt mining area is handed over to foreign interests. Several concerned employees shared their anxieties with Citi News, calling for immediate action to prevent the takeover.
One worker expressed their alarm, saying, “We’ve noticed Chinese individuals encroaching on our land and causing damage. We won’t stand for this because we have nowhere else to go. Pambros, like Sege, contributes to salt production in Ghana. We even learned that the Jubilee House spends a lot on salt. If our jobs are destroyed, how can we, as local producers, support the country? President Akufo-Addo must take action. The situation is frightening, especially since they’ve employed land guards.”
Another worker added, “As a country, we can’t sit back and watch ordinary Ghanaians suffer. It’s unfair to give our land to the Chinese. I urge the traditional authorities to ensure justice is served. They’ve taken over our land without our knowledge, and it’s unacceptable.”
The workers are appealing to President Akufo-Addo to intervene, citing the government’s significant expenditure on salt. They also expressed concern over the involvement of land guards by the alleged investors, describing the situation as “scary.”
