Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has announced that the government has earmarked GH¢8 billion to support farmers impacted by the recent severe drought. Acknowledging the magnitude of the crisis, Dr. Amin Adam noted that while the response may not fully mitigate the drought’s effects, it will play a crucial role in stabilizing the situation.
“Our response may not entirely neutralize the extent of the problem. But our response certainly will help stabilize the situation until we get out of the crisis,” Dr. Amin Adam stated.
The government plans to raise approximately $500 million (equivalent to GH¢8 billion) to fund the crisis response, which includes cash transfers and the distribution of food and essential supplies to affected farmers. A technical task force comprising the Ministries of Finance and Food and Agriculture will oversee the distribution of these relief items to ensure transparency and fairness.
Dr. Amin Adam also outlined the funding sources for the relief effort, with GH¢2.5 billion coming from the contingency fund and GH¢2.4 billion provided by development partners. He highlighted that the support from the World Bank will specifically target cash transfers and the provision of farming inputs.
