The Ghana Hydrological Authority has announced that it requires $5 billion to address the country’s persistent flood challenges effectively.
In 2023, the authority was allocated GH¢92 million under the National Flood Control Programme, an amount deemed insufficient for the scale of the issue.
Speaking at a session of the Assurance Committee in Parliament on Wednesday, Dr. John Kissi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, emphasized the critical need for the $5 billion to ensure comprehensive flood prevention and management across Ghana.
“In 2023, under the National Flood Control Programme, we received about GH¢92 million to undertake flood mitigation works across the country,” Dr. Kissi explained. “However, based on our assessment of the flood challenges nationwide, we estimate that around $5 billion is needed to comprehensively address the flood issues in every city and town across all regions.”
The substantial funding is considered essential to safeguard communities and infrastructure from the increasing threats posed by floods across the nation.
