The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has responded to allegations made by North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, regarding the receipt of uncirculated banknotes on behalf of the Central Bank of Liberia. Ablakwa claimed that the BoG had received these banknotes in a manner that raised concerns.

In a statement dated August 28, 2024, the BoG clarified that these banknotes are part of a long-standing arrangement between the two central banks, dating back to 2004. The agreement allows the BoG to receive imported currency on behalf of the Central Bank of Liberia, which is then re-exported to Monrovia.

“The Bank of Ghana has a long-standing currency transfer arrangement with the Central Bank of Liberia. The uncirculated banknotes mentioned in recent social media discussions are part of this agreement, and they will be re-exported once all logistical arrangements, including scheduled flights, are finalized,” the statement read.

The BoG emphasized that all relevant stakeholders are informed of these consignments’ entry and exit as part of their security protocols. The bank expressed disappointment over what it described as “unfortunate attempts” by Ablakwa to circulate sensitive information and create unnecessary public concern.

The Central Bank of Liberia also issued a statement confirming the arrangement with the BoG, noting that cash shipments are cleared through both Ghana and Liberia customs, validating their legitimate sources.

Both central banks stressed that the matter should not have become a public issue, given the long-standing and transparent nature of their arrangement.
