Agriculture Minister hints at lifting grain export ban by November

Ghana’s Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has announced the government’s intention to lift the recently imposed ban on grain exports by November.

This anticipated move is expected to bring relief to stakeholders in the agricultural and trade sectors, who have been affected by the export halt due to production challenges in northern Ghana.

The export ban, implemented last week, was a response to reports of reduced grain yields in the northern regions, primarily caused by an unusual dry spell that has significantly impacted crop production.

Concerns over food security and the potential rise in grain prices prompted the government to intervene quickly, prioritizing domestic needs to ensure a stable food supply before considering any exports.

During a recent media briefing, Dr. Acheampong expressed optimism that the agricultural sector’s current challenges would be resolved by November, paving the way for the resumption of grain exports. He emphasized the importance of closely monitoring the situation, particularly regarding weather patterns and crop yields in the affected areas.

“We will monitor the situation, but we believe that we will come out of this by November. Once the northern harvest comes in, followed by the southern sector and imports, we should be in a better position. By November, we should have more clarity, and we will keep the nation informed,” Dr. Acheampong stated.

The Minister’s remarks highlight the government’s commitment to addressing the ongoing agricultural issues while protecting the interests of local farmers and consumers, with the potential resumption of grain exports seen as a crucial step toward stabilizing market conditions.
