The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a stern warning to consumers to be extremely cautious when purchasing palm oil, following ongoing concerns about adulteration.
The FDA’s latest alert is part of its ongoing efforts to combat the presence of harmful substances, particularly the dangerous ‘Sudan Four’ dye, found in some palm oil products on the market.
This industrial dye, which is banned in food products due to its carcinogenic properties, poses a significant health risk to consumers. Roderick Daddey-Adjei, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the FDA, expressed serious concern about the continued presence of this issue, despite the Authority’s stringent enforcement actions.
While acknowledging progress in reducing the occurrence of adulterated palm oil, Daddey-Adjei stressed that even a small percentage of contamination is unacceptable.
“We are still not satisfied with the small percentage that remains, which indicates that those responsible for this dangerous practice are still out there. We want to make it clear to anyone who thinks they can continue this, that their days are numbered. We’ve already made arrests in connection with recent incidents, and we’ve handed those individuals over to the police,” he stated.
