Members of the Minority caucus on Parliament’s Mines and Energy Committee have justified their decision to boycott a stakeholder meeting on the pending Lithium Mining Agreement.
The agreement, presented by the Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor, in July 2024, involves the Government of Ghana and Barari DV and was referred to the Lands and Natural Resources Committee for review.
Ranking Member of the Committee, Alhassan Suhuyini, explained that the Minority members chose not to attend the meeting due to the emergency sitting of Parliament at the Accra International Conference Center. He stated that, as a result, the outcome of the meeting would not be recognized.
“Given the nature of today’s sitting and the venue chosen, we expected the Committee meeting to be rescheduled through proper consultation. However, the chairman of the committee unilaterally decided to proceed with the meeting, despite the urgent parliamentary business in the Chamber,” Suhuyini said.
He added that, in consultation with their leadership, the Minority decided to prioritize the emergency recall of Parliament and remain at the Chamber to conduct business. “That is why you may later notice that the committee meeting consisted only of members from the Majority,” Suhuyini concluded.
