Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, former Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Suame, has issued a strong warning about the risks of delaying the passage of Ghana’s lithium agreement.
During a parliamentary session, he emphasized the urgency of acting swiftly to prevent the country’s lithium resources from becoming stranded assets in the near future.
Addressing a stakeholder forum in Parliament on Tuesday, September 3, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu highlighted the increasing global demand for lithium, a key material in the production of batteries for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage. He stressed the critical importance of the agreement and urged lawmakers to expedite its passage through the legislative process.
He cautioned that the opportunity to benefit from this valuable resource might be shorter than expected. “We must recognize that if we delay, we risk having stranded assets in the near future. Lithium is not an endless resource,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu warned. “While we must proceed with caution, we cannot afford to miss this critical window of opportunity.”
