The staff groups of the Volta River Authority (VRA) have expressed strong opposition to a proposed merger involving the VRA, Bui Power Authority, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).
The proposal also seeks to establish an independent Thermal Power Authority by separating VRA’s thermal plants.
The VRA staff believe that the merger is a covert attempt to lease the authority to cronies. Theophilus Tetteh Ahia, Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of VRA, emphasized that the groups will take all legal measures to prevent the merger from happening.
“We are Ghanaians and significant stakeholders in this matter. We will use all legitimate means, including legal action, to ensure that Ghanaians are not shortchanged. We won’t sit back and allow Ghanaian assets to be sold to the highest bidder,” Ahia told Citi News.
The staff groups plan to petition the Trades Union Congress (TUC), highlighting that they too were not consulted on the merger. Additionally, they intend to petition President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, urging him to reconsider the proposal, which they believe is not in the best interest of the nation.
“We want Ghanaians to understand that we do not support this legislation or the sale of the VRA Thermal Plant,” Ahia added.
