Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has launched a GH¢100,000 emergency rent fund to aid victims of the Akosombo dam spillage, which occurred in October 2023.
The initiative is aimed at providing temporary accommodation for affected residents, as the region continues to deal with the aftermath of the disaster.
Ablakwa explained that this support is part of a broader goal to ensure the full resettlement and compensation of the more than 12,000 victims impacted by the spillage. He highlighted the ongoing struggles faced by 1,360 constituents who are still living in tents, calling the situation “inhumane.”
He also pledged to focus his next term on achieving comprehensive resettlement and compensation for all victims. “I am putting aside GH¢100,000 as emergency rent support for our brothers and sisters still in tents, with a special focus on women and nursing mothers,” Ablakwa stated after filing his nomination for the upcoming elections.
