PwC goes “Beyond the Surface” to explore the current state of carbon emissions in Ghana’s extractive sector
Industry experts, policymakers, and environmental advocates came together on Thursday, 12 September 2024, for a significant forum examining carbon emissions in Ghana’s extractive sector. “Beyond the Surface” hosted by professional services firm PwC, highlighted the current state of emissions within the industry and explored the urgent need for sustainable practices to mitigate environmental impacts.
The forum provided a platform for key stakeholders to discuss the environmental challenges posed by Ghana’s extractive sector, which remains a vital contributor to the nation’s economy. The discussion focussed on the integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) frameworks, the role of regulatory bodies, and innovative measures to reduce carbon emissions.
The event featured a distinguished panel of speakers including; Paul Ocran (In-Country Carbon Market Coordinator SEforAll), Dr. Daniel Tutu-Benefoh (Acting Director, Climate Change Unit of Environmental Protection Agency), Adiki Ayitevie (Sustainability, Communications and External Relations Consultant) and Richard Ansong (Partner and ESG Leader at PwC).
Richard Ansong remarked; “Ghana’s extractive sector is at a pivotal moment. We must prioritise reducing our carbon emissions to protect our environment and ensure the longevity of our natural resources. It is imperative that sustainable practices are integrated across all levels of the industry.”
Echoing this sentiment, Gifty Appiah, Associate Director, and Moderator of the forum added: “Adopting emissions reduction principles is not just a necessity but a responsibility. The extractive sector must lead by example, demonstrating that economic growth and environmental sustainability can go hand in hand.”
The event concluded with a collective call for stronger collaboration between the private sector, industry stakeholders, government bodies, and environmental groups to develop and implement policies that drive sustainable practices and significantly reduce carbon emissions in Ghana’s extractive sector.
