Accra power grid shows improvement, but challenges remain – Study

39views

A comprehensive dataset covering power outages and voltage fluctuations in Accra’s electricity grid has revealed significant improvements in system reliability and voltage quality over the past three years, but challenges persist in some districts.

The dataset–GridWatch Accra–released by nLine Inc., in collaboration with the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA), the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), collected from over 1,200 sensors across 14 districts of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) from 2018 to July 2024, shows that 2022 was the best year for Accra’s grid in terms of system reliability.

However, the Kasoa South, Ablekuma, and Nsawam districts recorded the highest number of outages in 2024, with Kasoa South experiencing 209 outages, eight times more than the Roman Ridge district, which had the fewest outages.

The data also reveals that voltage quality has improved significantly, with the average measured voltage increasing to 227V from 216V in 2021.

Despite progress, some districts continue to experience frequent brownouts and whiteouts, which can damage electric appliances.

The study’s findings highlight the importance of real-time data in power sector management, enabling evidence-based decision making, enhanced grid management, citizen empowerment, and knowledge development.

A multi-stakeholder partnership involving the Millennium Challenge Corporation, Millennium Development Authority, and nLine Inc. made the dataset possible.

The initiative aligns with Ghana’s long-term energy sustainability goals and presents opportunities for research, innovation, and continuous improvement.
