ACEP Calls for Dismissal of ECG Management over alleged mismanagement and revenue losses

53views

The Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) is demanding the removal of the management team at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), citing alleged mismanagement and escalating revenue losses. According to ACEP, ECG’s revenue losses surged from GH¢295 million in 2017 to GH¢9.7 billion by 2022.

Kodzo Yaotse, ACEP’s Policy Lead on Petroleum and Conventional Energy, raised concerns during a press conference on Thursday, September 19, emphasizing that ECG’s poor performance in revenue collection is placing a growing fiscal burden on Ghana’s economy. He warned that this mismanagement could negate the progress achieved through domestic and international debt restructuring efforts, ultimately leading to another debt crisis.

“The mounting debt from Independent Power Producers (IPP), gas suppliers, and transporters demanding payments is exerting pressure on the government, forcing it to prioritize these payments over social investments,” Yaotse stated.

He further criticized the wasteful use of state resources and called for an end to what he described as political inaction that has allowed ECG’s inefficiencies to continue undermining Ghana’s budget and development goals. Yaotse referenced the Energy Sector Recovery Programme (ESRP), which estimated that power sector shortfalls between 2019 and 2023 amounted to around US$8.25 billion, terming it a “sheer waste of public resources that cannot persist.”
