The management of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has confirmed an incident on Sunday, September 22, 2024, when a passenger’s luggage began emitting smoke at around 3:27 pm at the baggage wrap area in Terminal 3, Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
According to GACL, the Aviation Security Department was immediately alerted, and the suspicious luggage was quickly isolated. Passengers present at the terminal were promptly evacuated as part of GACL’s Emergency Operations procedures.
The passenger associated with the luggage has been handed over to the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) for further questioning, as stated in an official release.
GACL also used the opportunity to remind passengers that traveling with batteries is prohibited under International Civil Aviation Regulations. The statement warned that any detection of batteries or other restricted items would result in confiscation, and the passenger responsible would be handed over to authorities for further action.
“Management wishes to express gratitude to passengers who were in the departure hall at the time of the incident for their cooperation during the evacuation. The safety of our passengers is of utmost importance. Passenger facilitation and terminal operations have since resumed smoothly,” the statement concluded.
