The University of Ghana has postponed the start of the 2024/2025 academic year due to an ongoing strike by various teacher unions. The announcement was made by the University’s Registrar on September 25, 2024.
However, the university clarified that special programs would continue as planned, with a new date for the commencement of the academic year to be announced later.
The strike involves key unions, including the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), the Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Technical University Senior Administrators’ Association of Ghana (TUSAAG). These groups are demanding that the government address issues related to vehicle maintenance, pension allowances, and honouring their collective bargaining agreement by the end of September 2024.
The industrial action has disrupted essential academic and administrative functions, leading to the delay in the academic year’s commencement.
