The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced that it will commence Ghana Card registration for minors aged 6 to 14, starting on October 7, 2024. This initiative is part of the government’s effort to ensure all citizens are included in the national identification system.
The first phase of the registration will take place in schools across selected districts, making it more convenient for parents and guardians to register their children. By targeting schools, the NIA aims to streamline the process and increase accessibility for eligible children.
Alfred Gazari, Deputy Director of Operations at the NIA, emphasized the importance of this registration in achieving comprehensive national identification. Speaking to Citi News, Gazari stated, “It’s crucial to register children between 6 and 14 years as part of our goal to include every Ghanaian in the system. We’ve already registered those over 15 and started with children under 5, so this phase completes the process for all Ghanaians.”
He further stressed the significance of the Ghana Card, noting that without it, citizens would face challenges in accessing essential services. “Everybody needs the card. Without it, you can’t do anything meaningful. It’s important we include the 6 to 14-year-olds,” Gazari added.
