Ghana Telecoms Chamber warns of rising fibre cuts, $20m repair bill

40views

The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications has expressed concern over the surge in fibre cuts in the country, which have been causing significant damage to the nation’s telecommunications infrastructure and impacting customers’ network experience.

According to the Chamber, there were 5,133 fibre cuts across Ghana in the first half of 2024, resulting in a cost of GH¢118 million to repair these damages.

The Chamber believes that these funds could have been better utilised to expand and enhance existing services.

The Chamber is launching a “Save Our Fibre” campaign to stop the fibre cuts and is engaging with various stakeholders to curb the situation.

The Chamber is also working with the Minister of Roads and Highways, road agencies, road contractors, utility companies, and other key stakeholders to ensure that telecom infrastructure is protected during construction and utility activities.

However, despite these efforts, some entities have remained recalcitrant and have continued to cause harm to critical telecom infrastructure.

The Chamber believes that these actions have had a direct impact on service quality, leading to outages, slowdowns, and interruptions that frustrate subscribers and hinder the country’s digital progress.

To address this issue, the Chamber is proposing that its members consider taking legal action against uncooperative individuals and entities, ensuring they are held accountable according to the law.

The Chamber is also seeking the support of the Police and judiciary to prosecute those responsible for these recurrent fibre cuts.
