The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a 3.02% increase in electricity tariffs and a 1.06% rise in water tariffs, effective from October 1, 2024. These adjustments are part of the third-quarter tariff review for the year.
In a statement issued on Saturday, September 28, the PURC explained that the tariff hikes were necessary due to factors like inflation, exchange rate fluctuations, and rising gas prices. The commission emphasized that Ghana’s current economic challenges and the living conditions of its citizens were taken into account in the decision-making process.
The increases will apply to all consumer categories. The PURC’s statement highlighted, “The decision is based on changes in key parameters such as the inflation rate, exchange rate, and the Weighted Average Cost of Gas (WACOG) for the third quarter. We also considered the broader economic conditions, the standard of living of Ghanaians, and the sustainability of industries.”
