UTAG urges government to resolve concerns of striking University Unions

50views

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) is calling on the government to address the grievances of university unions currently on strike. The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), and the Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG) began their strike on Monday, September 16, 2024, over unresolved issues. Key among their concerns is the failure of the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) to implement vehicle maintenance and off-campus allowances, which had been approved by the Ministry of Finance in August 2024.

Adding to the tension, the Technical University Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) declared a nationwide strike starting Friday, September 27, 2024, also over the government’s failure to meet its obligations under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and implement revised allowances for senior public university staff.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Dr. Mamudu Akudugu, National President of UTAG, emphasized the urgency of resolving these issues to ensure normal academic activities resume.

“It’s a difficult situation, especially after the disruptions caused by COVID-19, which forced us to work hard to readjust the academic calendar,” Dr. Akudugu said. “I appeal to the government to resolve these issues swiftly so that our colleagues can feel assured and return to their duties.”
