EC to broadcast IPAC meeting live for first time, aims to promote transparency ahead of 2024 elections
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced its decision to broadcast the upcoming Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting live on Tuesday, October 1. This move is part of the EC’s efforts to increase transparency and accountability in its engagements with political parties as the December general elections approach.
According to the EC, the live broadcast will give Ghanaians direct access to discussions and decision-making processes within the IPAC meetings. The Commission clarified that this decision was made independently and not in response to external pressures, particularly from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ghana’s largest opposition party.
The NDC had previously called for live broadcasts of IPAC meetings, citing the need for more openness in election-related deliberations. Although the EC initially rejected these requests, stating that live broadcasts were unnecessary, it has now shifted its position, framing the move as a way to build confidence in the electoral process.
IPAC, which includes representatives from all registered political parties and the EC, is a key forum for discussing electoral reforms, operational challenges, and strategies for credible elections. With the 2024 general elections on the horizon, the upcoming meeting is expected to address critical issues such as voter registration, election logistics, and the integrity of the electoral roll.
The NDC has welcomed the EC’s decision to broadcast the meeting, stating that it will allow the public to assess the fairness and transparency of the process firsthand.
