In a major step toward addressing Ghana’s housing challenges, the government has announced plans to construct 609 new homes specifically for public sector employees. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the Minister for Works and Housing, made this announcement during a press briefing held in Accra on Monday, September 30, 2024.

Minister Nkrumah highlighted the government’s commitment to improving the living conditions of public servants, ensuring they have access to secure and comfortable homes. “These new housing units are part of our broader efforts to address Ghana’s housing deficit, currently estimated at 1.8 million units,” he said.

He emphasized that decent housing not only improves the lives of public servants but also enhances their ability to perform their duties effectively. The project, under the District Housing Programme, is designed to benefit essential workers such as teachers, nurses, police officers, and other public servants, particularly those in rural and underserved areas.

“Our public servants deserve quality housing that fosters a conducive environment for both their work and family life,” Nkrumah added. The homes will be built across various districts to ensure accessibility for those in more remote areas.

Minister Nkrumah also provided updates on several stalled housing projects. He confirmed that construction on the Koforidua Affordable Housing Project, which had previously been delayed, will resume after being handed over to the State Housing Company Limited. Additionally, ongoing negotiations aim to transfer the long-delayed Saglemi Housing Project, initially planned to deliver 5,000 units, to a private developer for completion.

To address the broader housing deficit, the Minister emphasized the collaboration with the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) to develop sustainable financing models. “The GIIF will play a pivotal role in securing funding and supporting our efforts to close the housing gap,” he noted.
