Organised Labour has announced a nationwide strike, set to begin on October 10, 2024, in response to the government’s failure to address concerns related to illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey.”
During an emergency meeting held on Tuesday, October 10, leaders of Organised Labour expressed their frustration with the government’s inaction on the issue. They had previously given the government until the end of September to implement decisive measures against illegal mining, citing its devastating impact on the environment and the livelihoods of many Ghanaians.
Joshua Ansah, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), stated, “Following the expiration of our deadline and the government’s failure to meet our demands on illegal mining, Organised Labour has decided to declare a nationwide strike, effective October 10, 2024.”
He urged all workers to remain at home from Thursday, October 10, as part of the effort to press the government into taking swift action to combat the ongoing illegal mining activities.
