The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has called on magistrates and judges to maintain impartiality in handling any cases that may arise from the upcoming December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Speaking at the Annual Conference of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana at La Beach on Wednesday, October 2, Mr. Dame emphasized the importance of ensuring that no wrongdoing, whether political, criminal, or civil, goes unpunished as the nation heads toward a major poll.
“The Judiciary, vested with the power to resolve disputes between the state and its organs, individuals, and businesses, must remain an impartial arbiter. Justice must be dispensed solely based on the law,” he stated.
He highlighted the need for judges to ensure that crimes are not overlooked for any segment of society, regardless of privilege. “Judges must understand that their work serves the interests of the state alone,” Mr. Dame added.
Additionally, the Attorney-General urged judges to avoid being influenced by emotions or public sentiment in their rulings. “As we approach a critical phase in our nation’s life with the elections, it is vital for the Judiciary to demonstrate that justice is delivered according to law, not emotions, popular opinion, or public sentiment. The Judiciary must remain impervious to any influence other than the law,” he stressed.
