The Ghana Police Service has warned the organisers of the Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey demonstration, scheduled for October 3 to 5, 2024, that they will be held accountable if any laws are broken during the protest.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the police reminded the organisers of their obligations under the Public Order Act, particularly their responsibility for any damage to public property. “The organisers have been made aware that they will be held liable for any damage caused during the demonstration,” the statement said.
Participants were also cautioned to follow police directions during the event, ensuring the smooth movement of people and vehicles while maintaining order. “Demonstrators must obey police instructions to avoid causing traffic obstructions, confusion, or disorder,” the police added.
The police further noted their own responsibilities under the Public Order Act, including directing the demonstration routes to prevent traffic disruptions and dispersing crowds if there is a risk of violence or disorder. The police may also close streets or set up barriers to ensure public order and safety.
The statement concluded by assuring the public that adequate security measures are in place to maintain law and order throughout the demonstration.
