Government Reaffirms Commitment to Tackling Illegal Mining, Engages Labour Leaders
Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar has reiterated the government’s dedication to working with all stakeholders to address Ghana’s illegal mining crisis, also known as galamsey. In a statement issued on Friday, October 4, following a private meeting between President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and leaders of Organised Labour, she emphasized that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government is focused on protecting the environment while promoting sustainable mining practices.
The meeting came in response to Organised Labour’s declaration of an indefinite strike, set to begin on October 10, after the government’s failure to meet their demands for a total ban on all forms of mining and the declaration of a state of emergency to combat galamsey.
President Akufo-Addo used the opportunity to urge labour leaders to reconsider the planned strike, assuring them of his commitment to addressing their concerns. According to sources, the President requested additional time to address the demands presented by the labour group.
In her statement, Fatimatu Abubakar reiterated the government’s continued efforts towards sustainable mining and environmental protection. She reassured the public that the administration would maintain dialogue with all stakeholders to achieve these objectives.
