The Minerals Commission has raised concerns about the police’s lack of action in addressing illegal mining activities, particularly behind the Anyinam Police Station, where mining is reportedly ongoing without any intervention from security forces.
The Commission emphasized that mining in water bodies is strictly illegal, yet no arrests have been made by the police in such cases.
During a meeting with the Government Assurances Committee of Parliament on Monday, October 7, Martin Ayisi, Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, expressed frustration over the police’s inaction and called for more proactive measures to tackle the issue.
“Anyone mining in river bodies is engaging in an illegal activity. We’ve reported to security agencies that these activities happen at night, but our role ends there,” Ayisi said, highlighting the challenges the Commission faces in ensuring compliance.
Ayisi urged district assemblies and security forces to take immediate steps to stop illegal mining activities, particularly in areas like Anyinam, where mining operations are taking place dangerously close to the police station without proper permits.
