The Divisional Executives Council of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) under the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana, representing the National Identification Authority (NIA), has declared an industrial strike starting today, October 7.
In a statement issued on Sunday, October 6, the workers cited their employer’s failure to implement a newly approved Scheme of Service (SoS) as the primary reason for the strike. They emphasized that they would not return to work until the agreed SoS is fully operational.
“After exercising exhaustive patience and making repeated demands, we regret to inform you that your failure to operationalize the newly approved Scheme of Service has left us no choice but to take this decisive action starting Monday, October 7, 2024,” the statement read. “We will not report to work until the SoS is implemented in full.”
The workers expressed their frustration, calling the delay a breach of trust and a threat to their well-being. They described the SoS, which was approved by the Public Services Commission (PSC) in March, as essential to their survival and progress.
“Management’s refusal to implement this critical document is a betrayal and an attack on our welfare,” they added, urging swift action to resolve the matter.
