The convenor of the Democracy Hub’s anti-galamsey protest, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has been denied bail for the third time by the Circuit Court. His bail request, which follows his arrest during a demonstration two weeks ago, was again opposed by the Attorney General’s Department.
Previously, Barker-Vormawor had also been denied bail by both an Accra High Court and the Circuit Court.
In contrast, fellow detainee Fanny Otoo, who has been unwell since her arrest, was granted bail set at GH₵20,000 with two sureties.
The court has adjourned Barker-Vormawor’s case to October 14, 2024.
In a related development, the State opposed bail applications for 20 other anti-galamsey protesters, citing a failure to receive the necessary documentation, despite court records showing they were served on October 2. The judge has ordered that the protestors’ lawyers ensure proper service, and the case has been adjourned to Wednesday, October 9.
