The Ghana Institution of Engineering has stressed the importance of educating motorists on road traffic regulations as a measure to reduce accidents. The institution believes that road safety can be significantly improved if drivers are well-informed about their responsibilities when behind the wheel.
This call comes in the wake of a series of road accidents in areas such as East Legon, the Accra-Kumasi Highway, and the Kumasi-Obuasi stretch.
Speaking to Citi News, Ing. Kwabena Bempong, President of the Ghana Institution of Engineering, urged the police to intensify efforts to enhance road safety. He encouraged law enforcement to go beyond penalizing minor offenses and focus on cautioning drivers. “Apart from just stopping people for minor offences, they should remind drivers of their responsibilities, especially commercial drivers,” he said.
Ing. Bempong also advised motorists to exercise greater caution as the Christmas season and the upcoming general election approach. He emphasized the need for “defensive driving,” where drivers anticipate potential hazards to reduce the risk of accidents. “We all know that as we get closer to holidays or elections, some people may become overly excited and drive recklessly,” he warned.
