The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications has announced a remarkable contribution of over GHS 9.83 billion in taxes and related payments to the government in 2023. This represents a 30% increase from the GHS 6 billion recorded in 2022, accounting for approximately 7.38% of Ghana’s total revenue for the year.

Speaking at the launch of the Transparency Initiative Report, Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, emphasized the sector’s vital role in the nation’s economy.

“Telecom chambers are contributing massively to Ghana’s economy. These taxes paid to the government represent progressive contributions,” Dr. Ashigbey remarked.

He further elaborated on the industry’s financial impact, stating, “If you combine the total taxes and other remittances to government agencies, the amount reaches GHS 9.8 billion, forming about 7.4% of the government’s total revenue.”

The report also highlighted the telecom sector’s contributions to employment, with 2,464 direct jobs created in 2023. However, this figure reflects a slight decline from the 2,600 jobs recorded in 2022.

Jointly published by the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications and the Electronic Money Issuers Chamber of Ghana, the Transparency Initiative Report provides a comprehensive analysis of the telecom industry’s economic and social contributions.

The telecom sector’s increasing financial contributions and its role in job creation underscore its strategic importance to Ghana’s economic development. Industry stakeholders have called for continued support to further enhance the sector’s growth and impact.
