A new book titled Africa’s New Constitutional Leadership: 77 Stories that Defined Ghana’s 4th Republic, authored by renowned journalist and host of Good Evening Ghana on Metro TV, Mr. Paul Adom-Otchere, was officially launched in Accra on Friday.
The 582-page publication offers an in-depth exploration of the pivotal events, decisions, and milestones that have shaped Ghana’s Fourth Republic, making it a valuable resource for understanding the country’s democratic journey.
The Launch Event
The book launch was a high-profile event attended by notable dignitaries, including Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, who recently assumed the role of Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.
In her remarks, Ms. Botchwey commended Mr. Adom-Otchere for his dedication to documenting Ghana’s democratic evolution and emphasized the importance of books in preserving history and fostering national discourse.
“Books are not only a source of life lessons but also a vehicle that transports us through time. Our Fourth Republic did not come into being due to pressure or external forces,” she stated.
She further highlighted Ghana’s achievements in ensuring peaceful transitions of power over the years, noting, “We do not go to war during or after elections, and that is a testament to our democratic maturity.”
The Author’s Perspective
Mr. Paul Adom-Otchere shared his motivations for writing the book, explaining that it was driven by a need to educate the younger generation about the significance of the Fourth Republic.
“Every time we say ‘Fourth Republic,’ the new generation doesn’t understand. They wonder why not the Third Republic,” he noted. By documenting Ghana’s democratic progress, the book seeks to bridge this knowledge gap and serve as a guide for those interested in governance and democracy.
About the Book
The 582-page book is structured into eight parts, representing the eight administrations that have governed Ghana since the inception of the Fourth Republic in 1993.
Within these sections are 77 detailed stories recounting key moments, policies, and personalities that have shaped Ghana’s democratic landscape. From peaceful transitions of power to major policy decisions, the book provides a comprehensive overview of Ghana’s political history over the last three decades.
