Former President John Dramani Mahama has been declared the winner of Ghana’s 2024 presidential election, marking a historic return to the nation’s highest office. The Electoral Commission (EC) announced on Monday, December 9, that Mahama secured 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the valid ballots cast. His primary opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 4,657,304 votes, or 41.61%.
Mahama’s victory also solidified the dominance of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament, with the party capturing over 160 seats, including key constituencies traditionally held by the ruling NPP. This parliamentary majority strengthens Mahama’s mandate as he prepares to lead the nation once again.
A Peaceful Yet Challenging Election
The 2024 election recorded a voter turnout of 60.9%. While the process was largely peaceful, isolated incidents of violence and logistical challenges were reported in constituencies such as Damongo, Ablekuma Central, and Okaikwei North.
In a concession speech, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged Mahama’s victory and urged his supporters to respect the outcome. “We have fought a good fight. The people have spoken, and we must respect their decision,” he stated, calling for unity as the nation moves forward.
Looking Ahead: Mahama’s Second Term
Mahama is set to address the nation following the declaration by EC Chairperson Jean Mensa. His speech is expected to outline his vision for Ghana as he begins his second term, which will commence with his swearing-in on January 7, 2025.
This election marks a significant comeback for Mahama, who previously served as president from 2012 to 2016 before losing to Nana Akufo-Addo in 2016 and again in 2020. His victory follows predictions from organizations such as the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), Global InfoAnalytics, and Fitch, which forecasted a win for the opposition amidst growing public dissatisfaction.
Electoral Commission Praised for Credibility
Local and international observers have commended the Electoral Commission for its transparent and credible management of the election, despite logistical challenges.
As Mahama prepares to resume leadership, his party’s parliamentary majority provides a robust platform for pursuing his policies and navigating the challenges that lie ahead. This victory represents not only a political shift but also an opportunity for renewed governance in Ghana.
