IES: Rescheduled WAPCO Maintenance to Boost Liquid Fuel Reserves

7views

The Institute of Energy Security (IES) has stated that the rescheduled maintenance works by the West Africa Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCO) will allow the government to bolster liquid fuel reserves for powering thermal plants during supply shortages.

The remarks from IES follow WAPCO’s confirmation that the second phase of its maintenance works will take place from February 3 to March 2, 2025. This phase will include offshore pipeline cleaning and inspection, a process known as pigging.

Speaking to Citi Business News, IES Executive Director Nana Amoasi VII highlighted that the planned maintenance will also aid in sustaining energy generation.

“The postponement of the maintenance programme gives the government sufficient time to build up liquid fuel reserves. If gas supply to power plants in the Eastern enclave is disrupted during the maintenance period, there will be enough liquid fuel to keep them running,” he explained.

He noted that this measure would ensure the continuous operation of key facilities such as the Asogli and Tema power plants, preventing a loss in generation capacity. “With adequate preparations, the government can proceed confidently, avoiding public criticism, while consumers can be assured of a stable power supply,” he added.

The rescheduled maintenance presents an opportunity for proactive energy planning, ensuring that power generation remains uninterrupted despite the temporary disruption in gas supply.
