Mahama Ayariga, the newly appointed Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, has resolved to ensure that the ruling party’s significant parliamentary majority is wielded responsibly and inclusively.
Speaking during his acceptance speech on Thursday, 23 January 2025, Mr Ayariga emphasised the need for consensus-building and the importance of fostering unity in Parliament. He reiterated President John Dramani Mahama’s assurance that the overwhelming numbers held by the majority would not be misused.
“As President John Dramani Mahama has said, these overwhelming numbers will not be abused,” Mr Ayariga declared.
“Even though we are an overwhelming majority, we will strive for inclusivity, consensus-building and deeply uphold the principles of probity and accountability in the fulfilment of the dreams of our founding fathers.”
He further committed to advancing democracy and national unity while ensuring equitable development across the country.
Mr Ayariga acknowledged that the journey ahead would not be without challenges but expressed optimism in the ability of Parliament to surmount obstacles through constructive dialogue and mutual respect.
“The road ahead will not be without challenges, but I am confident that together, through constructive dialogue and mutual respect, we can overcome any obstacles and deliver on our collective vision,” he concluded.
The Majority Caucus in Parliament on Thursday announced a major reshuffle in its leadership, prompted by Dr Cassiel Ato Forson’s recent appointment as the Minister of Finance. Dr. Forson’s transition from his previous role as Majority Leader necessitated the changes in leadership.
The reshuffle is aimed at bolstering the leadership team within the Majority Caucus as they advance their governance agenda.
Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, replaces Dr. Forson. Kweku George Ricketts-Hagan, the MP for Cape Coast South, has been named the Deputy Majority Leader.
Others are, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, MP for South Dayi, takes over as the Majority Chief Whip, replacing Kwame Governs Agbodza.
Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, the MP for Ada Constituency, will now serve as the First Deputy Whip, while Richard Acheampong, MP for Bia East, assumes the role of Second Deputy Majority Whip.
