The Minority in Parliament has condemned Speaker Alban Bagbin for suspending three of their members from parliamentary proceedings for two weeks, starting January 31, 2025.
The suspension follows a violent confrontation during the Appointments Committee’s vetting session on January 30, 2025, involving Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
The affected MPs include Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Second Minority Whip Jerry Ahmed Shaib, and Alhassan Sulemana Tampulo, MP for Gushegu. Additionally, Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor was also suspended.
In a statement issued on February 1, the Minority Caucus denounced the Speaker’s decision, calling it politically motivated and an abuse of power.
“We strongly oppose the suspension of our three MPs and demand its immediate reversal. If such unjustified actions persist, it will set a dangerous precedent where the Speaker wields unchecked authority, using disciplinary measures as a political weapon.”
The Minority further emphasized the need for fairness and adherence to democratic principles in Parliament.
“Parliament must uphold democracy, not serve as a tool for oppression. The Ghanaian people deserve a legislative body that respects diverse opinions, not one that punishes members for standing up for due process and accountability.”
