The Food and Beverages Association of Ghana (FABAG) has called on the government to take immediate action to tighten border controls and curb the illegal importation of food products into the country.
The association warns that unchecked smuggling not only leads to significant revenue losses for the state but also creates unfair competition for legitimate businesses operating within the industry.
Speaking to Citi Business News, FABAG’s Executive Chairman, John Awuni, emphasized the urgency of the situation, urging the government to intervene.
“Unscrupulous business people are smuggling goods through illegal entry points, which has become a major concern for the business community. Smuggling is eating away at potential government revenue, and if authorities assess the tax contributions from certain commodities, they will notice a decline,” Awuni stated.
He highlighted key smuggled products, including sugar, rice, and cooking oil, stressing the need for stricter enforcement measures to protect local businesses and safeguard government revenue.
