The Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) has awarded full academic scholarships to 22 Liberian students to pursue higher education at the Regional Maritime University (RMU) in Accra, Ghana. The group, which departed Monrovia early Monday morning, represents the largest single cohort ever sponsored by the Authority.
The beneficiaries, selected through a rigorous recruitment process, will study at both undergraduate and graduate levels in key maritime-related fields such as Ports and Shipping Administration, International Shipping and Logistics, Environmental Management, Renewable Energy Engineering, and Marine Engineering.
Of the total, 19 students, 11 males and 8 females, will pursue postgraduate degrees, while three will enroll in undergraduate programs. The postgraduate candidates include specialists in Environmental Management, Renewable Energy Engineering, and Shipping Logistics, disciplines seen as vital to the future of sustainable maritime development.
LiMA Commissioner and CEO, Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr. hailed the initiative as a strategic investment in Liberia’s future.
“Liberia’s position as a leading maritime nation requires us to continuously build a strong cadre of qualified professionals who can meet emerging challenges in shipping, port management, and environmental sustainability,” he said. He further urged the students to excel in their studies, reminding them that they carry the nation’s image abroad.
The RMU, founded by five West and Central African states, is recognized as a regional hub for maritime training and education. Liberia’s active participation in the university’s programs underscores its commitment to strengthening human resource capacity in the maritime sector and maintaining its competitive edge in the global shipping industry.
Classes at RMU are set to commence in the coming days.
