A total of 63 Members of Parliament (MPs) from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) minority caucus have officially declared their support for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer, ahead of the January 2026 presidential primaries.

In a jointly signed statement titled “Statement of Support and Declaration for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” the MPs described the Vice President as the embodiment of the NPP’s cherished values of freedom, democracy, rule of law, and enterprise, noting that his leadership philosophy reflects the legacy of the party’s founding fathers — Dr. J. B. Danquah, Dr. K. A. Busia, and Chief S. D. Dombo.

The declaration, coordinated by Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, MP for Mampong, is regarded as one of the largest organized endorsements within the NPP parliamentary caucus for Dr. Bawumia. It follows weeks of internal consultations and individual commitments from MPs across several regions.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia represents the enduring spirit of our party — visionary, resilient, diligent, and pragmatic,” the statement read. “He has shown that leadership is not about words but work; not about entitlement but excellence and delivery.”

The MPs cited Dr. Bawumia’s leadership in advancing digital transformation, financial inclusion, and public sector modernization as proof of his ability to lead both party and nation into what they described as “a new era of progress, opportunity, and national pride.”

According to the group, their decision is rooted in conviction rather than sentiment.

We have witnessed his discipline, work ethic, and readiness to serve. We believe Dr. Bawumia represents the next chapter of the NPP’s vision — a future built on competence, innovation, unity, and hope,” they said.

They further appealed to NPP delegates nationwide to “reward loyalty, humility, and hard work with trust”, urging them to “choose the man who has walked the path, carried the burden, and delivered results.”

The MPs described Dr. Bawumia as the candidate capable of uniting the party and earning the trust of Ghanaians, confident that he possesses the leadership qualities required to secure victory for the NPP in the 2028 general elections and beyond.

He carries Danquah’s courage, Busia’s intellect, and Dombo’s humility and unifying heart,” the statement concluded. “With him, the NPP will not only win but lead Ghana into a new phase of transformation and national renewal.”

The declaration was endorsed by leading MPs including Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Samuel Abu Jinapor, Mustapha Ussif, Dominic Nitiwul, Francis Asenso-Boakye, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, among others from the Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, Northern, and Eastern Regions.

With 63 out of 87 NPP minority MPs now publicly backing Dr. Bawumia, the momentum within the parliamentary caucus appears to have shifted decisively in his favour — a development analysts say could strongly influence delegate sentiment ahead of the party’s upcoming primaries.
