Government has received a comprehensive business model and operational framework to guide its engagement with a potential strategic partner for the establishment of Ghana’s national airline, the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has disclosed.

Appearing before Parliament to answer questions on the status of the national carrier, Mr. Nikpe said the document, which has been submitted to the Office of the President, marks a major step forward in government’s efforts to revive Ghana’s aviation identity.

A task force set up by government on May 7, 2025, has made significant progress in developing a workable framework for the establishment of the national airline,” the Minister told lawmakers.

Mr. Nikpe emphasized that the initiative goes beyond restoring a flag carrier.

The establishment of a national airline is a matter of strategic national importance. It is not merely about having planes in the air; it is about positioning Ghana as a vital aviation hub in the sub-region, promoting tourism, creating jobs, and opening up new avenues for trade and economic growth,” he noted.

The Minister assured Parliament that the Ministry of Transport remains committed to ensuring that every aspect of the process is carried out with professionalism, transparency, and fiscal responsibility.

He further explained that although the Ministry has received several proposals from interested investors, government has not yet reached the stage of evaluating the full content of those proposals.

We are taking a careful and methodical approach to ensure that whichever partner is eventually selected will align with Ghana’s long-term aviation strategy and national development objectives,” Mr. Nikpe added.

The move comes amid renewed calls for Ghana to re-establish a national carrier capable of serving as a symbol of national pride while connecting the country more effectively to regional and global destinations.

Industry watchers believe that if implemented efficiently, the new airline could help revitalize the aviation sector, enhance passenger connectivity, and support Ghana’s ambition to become West Africa’s leading aviation hub—particularly with ongoing investments in airport infrastructure and regional air routes.
