The price of Ghana’s staple fermented corn dish, kenkey, has remained relatively stable, with an average price of 5.45 cedis ($0.45) in September, up from 5.37 cedis in June, according to data from The Kenkey Index.
The most common price of kenkey is 5 cedis, accounting for 75% of sales, the index said. Despite a parliamentary debate on the issue, data shows the real price of kenkey has actually fallen, with vendors increasing the weight of their products by 3.27% over the same period.
The inflation-adjusted price of 500 grams of kenkey dropped 3.25% to 6.37 cedis, in line with national food inflation of 11% year-on-year.
The Kenkey Index, which tracks prices of the traditional dish, said the data suggests Ghanaians got a better deal in the last quarter.
